I love wood ducks. They are plentiful in West Central MN where I live. They like to make their nests in a hollowed out area in a tree. I was under one of those trees when the parents decided it was time to kick their babies out of the nest and head to the water. It was literally raining baby wood ducks. Then after the fall comes the sometimes long trek to the water where they find greater safety than on land. A parent will often feign injury and head in the opposite direction of her chicks while they hide in the reeds if you get too close to them in the water. It’s almost a strange site to see a duck fly up into a tree.
