Hi Laura,
I just love this photo of the Common Yellowthroat! It’s the best picture that I have seen so far. It so depicts what I think his personality might be.
I wanted to share a poem I wrote about him recently. I used your photo to educate my poetry group about warblers. I’m going to steer them to your website next.
Warbler Season
Just behind the waterfall
I see him —
A tiny jewel, brilliant yellow,
Glittering like a rare Canary diamond,
Splashing in the small stream,
Bathing away the dust
Of his more than thousand mile journey.
I dare not move —
Warblers are difficult to spot,
Migrating through New England in May —
Chatting and flitting
In the highest branches
Of our maples and oaks,
Searching out lime-green caterpillars,
Foraging for shiny beetles and spiders
In last summer’s leaves
Under the dense flower-laden azaleas.
He is called, Common Yellowthroat,
Though common he is not —
A black bandit mask he wears
But steal, he does not —
He delights in the cool water —
l delight in his presence,
For tonight he may fly northward
Navigating by moon and stars
With others of his kind,
And sadly, I will not see him again.
He is called Common Yellowthroat,
But common he is not —
A black bandit mask he wears,
But steal, he does not —
Well, except for today —
When he stole my heart.
